WHO :: Messiah
Use the lead app to check in students and make sure any students not listed fill out a connect card digitally.
Do not move on until checkin has happened and any students not listed have filled out a connect card.
Take a moment to check in from last week: Ask how life was different since last week (Considering Deny Yourself, Take up your cross, and follow Jesus)
Have everybody in the group share their favorite sport/video game/ board game.
Ask the students “What does it mean for Jesus to be the Messiah?”
Anointed One
Ask is anyine remembers the Hebrew word for Messiah
The Hebrew word for Messiah is mashiach. It means anointed one.
Have a student read Matthew 16:13-19 in group.
Our Standard bibles are ESV which translates messiah to Christ. So leaders reread the same passage from the NLT:
Matthew 16:13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 “Well,” they replied, “some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say Jeremiah or one of the other prophets.” 15 Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” 17 Jesus replied, “You are blessed, Simon son of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being. 18 Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means ‘rock’), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it. 19And I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you forbid on earth will be forbidden in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven.” NLT
Greek is christos : meaning anointed
Ask “Have you ever thought about Jesus in this way?”
Discuss this guiding the students to the truth of Jesus being the anointed one.
The chosen one has chosen each of us to be a part of what he is doing to build his kingdom here and now.
Three things we can do to step into that:
Follow Jesus
Build the church
Bury Hell
Ask the students “What are the ways in our lives starting right now we can step into all three of those things?”
As leaders guide the conversation to specific real world actions they can take in their lives - even if you only have a few kids really engage work with them in that discipleship model to show the whole group how the church grows one another up.
Pray as a group.
We will know we have hit our target if:
-Everyone understands what Messiah means. Anointed one.
-Everyone leaves with simple ways to step into following Jesus, building the church, and burying hell.
-All students are completely aware that midnight tonight is the deadline for getting a t-shirt when you sign up for Collision.
-The students feel seen and heard from their leaders.
