Promises of God :: After Sin
Use the lead app to check in students and make sure any students not listed fill out a connect card digitally.
Do not move on until check-in has happened and any students not listed have filled out a connect card.
Remind them they can ask us anything by texting AMA to 678-798-8338 or by dropping a card in the lobby AMA Box.
Guy Groups: Before you start spend a few minutes talking about the Foundry. Have the guys share their favorite part. And hand out a pledge card to each student in the group. Explain the pledge to the guys who couldn’t make it to Foundry.
WHAT DID GOD PROMISE AFTER SIN ENTERED INTO THE WORLD?
Let’s start by having a brief discussion about the video we watched before we got into small group.
(Here are a few questions to help)
Who tempts Eve to first sin?
What does God promise to Adam and Eve?
Why is the King bitten by the snake?
What good comes from the King’s snakebite?
Now Take turns reading the following passages of Scripture together, drawing particular attention to the bold portions of text:
Genesis 3:15
I will put enmity between you and the woman,and between your offspring[a] and her offspring;
he shall bruise your head,
and you shall bruise his heel.”
Genesis 49:8,10
8“Judah, your brothers shall praise you; your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies; your father’s sons shall bow down before you.10The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until tribute comes to him; and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.
Isaiah 9:6-7
6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
Take a moment and speak about this truth: Despite our deep sinfulness, God promised to rescue us from sin and death through his son, the victorious King we need.
Now lets explore the passages.
According to Genesis 3, who will bruise the serpent’s head?
What does the Promises “The scepter will not depart from Judah” mean?
Why do these passages depict Jesus as King?
Based on these passages what can we know about Jesus?
Now lets try to figure out how to apply this to our lives.
Have a discussion with the students and be intentional to get the conversation going and the students sharing.
How might our lives look different if we truly believed that Jesus is King?
When was a time when you felt overwhelmed by the brokenness and pain in the world?
Which of Jesus’ names from Isaiah 9 has been most meaningful to you? How so?
THE BIG QUESTION:
WHAT DID GOD PROMISE AFTER SIN ENTERED INTO THE WORLD?
Allow students to answer the question in their own words.
Finish by making sure they understand this answer though:
God promised that a Savior would defeat evil and rescue his creation from the power of sin and death.
NEXT STEPS:
Give students a piece of paper, a pen, and a few minutes to journal a response to the following prompt:
Make a list of the ways sin and death have impacted your life. (Younger students may need extra guidance in this.)
Beside each point of pain, write the name for Jesus that best addresses your situation:
Wonderful Counselor
Mighty God
Everlasting Father
Prince of Peace.
Then as a group spend a few moments praying and thanking God for sending his son to rescue us from the power of sin and death.
Finish by asking the students to pick one of the names of Jesus from Isaiah that resonates with them the most and commit to keep that name in their minds and their hearts as we head into this Christmas Season.
(Put their papers back into your small group buckets.
We will know we have hit our target if:
-Students and leaders understand that sin has paved the way of this world that seperated us from our God.. But once it got here God promised a way through his son for mankind to get back into a right relationship with him.
-Everyone leaves with a specific name of Jesus stored up in their minds and hearts fro the coming Christmas Season.
