Worship is not about what you do. It’s about how you be:
Remind them of what humility is:
freedom from pride or arrogance : the quality or state of being humble
True humility is not thinking less of your self; it is thinking of yourself less.
Using OIA discuss this scripture of John the baptist being confronted about Jesus..
Have a student read John 3:22-36 (Below so you can follow along)
22After this Jesus and his disciples went into the Judean countryside, and he remained there with them and was baptizing. 23John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because water was plentiful there, and people were coming and being baptized 24(for John had not yet been put in prison).
25Now a discussion arose between some of John’s disciples and a Jew over purification. 26And they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, he who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you bore witness—look, he is baptizing, and all are going to him.” 27John answered, “A person cannot receive even one thing unless it is given him from heaven. 28You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, ‘I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before him.’ 29The one who has the bride is the bridegroom. The friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom’s voice. Therefore this joy of mine is now complete. 30He must increase, but I must decrease.”
31 He who comes from above is above all. He who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks in an earthly way. He who comes from heaven is above all. 32He bears witness to what he has seen and heard, yet no one receives his testimony. 33Whoever receives his testimony sets his seal to this, that God is true. 34For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure. 35The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand. 36Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.
Follow up questions that may help:
How does John handle people asking him about how he feels that Jesus is doing the thing he is known for doing?
He says he must increase but I must decrease in verse 30
How does the way John handles the people’s questions similar to the way Gideon handles the people asking him to lead?
How can we live lives where he is increasing while we are decreasing?
Examples:
Embrace opportunities of anonymity - do good without recognition
Practice gratitude - gratitude is an act of humility every time you do it.
Prioritize God’s Kingdom and his Glory over your own stuff.
Pay attention to your thoughts and when you find yourself being the center of attention in your own head re-align your focus on God.
How can we practice humility in our worship here at Moxie?
Next Step
What is one way you can pursue thinking of yourself less this coming week?
This will need guidance. Keep pointing them back to worshipping in spirit and in truth - that this isn’t a check list but a heart thing.
Finish by praying as a group.
We will know we have hit our target if:
-Students and leaders understand that humility in worship is the act of focusing all our attention and affection on God and his Glory.
-Everyone leaves with a specific way to think of themselves less when we gather next week.
