Beyond | Wk 4: Heaven is a Promise. Not a Metaphor.

Life is full of unseen next steps and seasons of uncertainty. Beyond helps students move toward the future God is inviting them into through Scripture and practical rhythms. Drawing from James, Romans, 1 Peter, John, and Jeremiah, the series shows that hardship refines faith and produces hope. Each session pairs honest theology with simple practices like prayer and community, forming steady, forward-looking faith rooted in God’s work today and his promises for tomorrow.

BOTTOM LINE
Heaven is a Promise. Not a Metaphor.

SCRIPTURE
John 14:1-3 & 5-6 “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God;[a] believe also in me. 2 In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?[b] 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also... 5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

  • TAKE ATTENDANCE & INTRODUCE YOURSELF (If anyone is new)

FOR FUN: Take some time to catch up. Ask your students – What is one thing right now that you are counting down the days for?

    DISCUSS THIS:

    1. When you hear the word ‘Heaven’ what comes to mind? (Do you think of it being a place? Do you think of someone? Do you still have questions about Heaven?)

    2. A lot of people think of Heaven as a "vibe," a "state of mind," or just a "nice thought." The message argued that Heaven is a promise, not a metaphor. How does it change your perspective to think of Heaven as a physical place—with streets, walls, and actual rooms—rather than just a floating cloud?

    3. In the "No-More" list (Revelation 21:4), we see there will be no more death, sorrow, crying, or pain. Which one of those "No-Mores" do you think our world (or your school) needs the most right now? Why?

    4. The Way, Not a Map – In John 14:5, Thomas basically says, "...how can we know the way?" Jesus responds by saying He is the Way. When you are stressed about making the "right" choice for your future, how does it feel to know that staying close to Jesus is more important than having your whole life figured out right now?

    5. We talk about Heaven in terms of seeing God. The Bible also mentions reunion with other believers. Is there someone who has passed, or someone from the Bible, you are most excited to talk to? How does the "Welcome Home" party imagery make Heaven feel more like a home and less like a far-off destination?

    6. The Greek word for repent (metanoia) means "to change your mind" or surrender your thoughts and actions to Christ. What is one area of your life (a habit, a worry, or a friendship) where you need to "change your mind" and start trusting Jesus’ way instead of your own?

    7. One of the applications was to "Look Up" (at the reality of Heaven) before you "Look Ahead" (at your stressful schedule). What is a practical way you can remind yourself of the "Beyond" when you’re in the middle of a stressful week? (e.g., a phone wallpaper, a specific verse on your mirror, or a prayer during your commute).
