Beyond | Wk 1: The Gift on the Other Side of the Battle

Life is full of unseen next steps and seasons of uncertainty. Beyond helps students move toward the future God is inviting them into through Scripture and practical rhythms. Drawing from James, Romans, 1 Peter, John, and Jeremiah, the series shows that hardship refines faith and produces hope. Each session pairs honest theology with simple practices like prayer and community, forming steady, forward-looking faith rooted in God’s work today and his promises for tomorrow.

BOTTOM LINE
Unashamed to share the Gospel.

SCRIPTURE
1 Samuel 17:45-47 David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.”

  • TAKE ATTENDANCE & INTRODUCE YOURSELF (If anyone is new)

FOR FUN: Take some time to catch up. Ask your students – Ask everyone to think of a "hidden talent" or a weird fact about themselves that no one in the room knows (something "beyond" what people see on the surface)

    DISCUSS THIS:
    1. The lesson mentioned two types of battles: those that "drop in your lap" (unexpected crises) and those you "choose" (fighting for a goal). In your life right now, which one feels more common? Why do you think the "chosen" battles are often the hardest to start?

    2. When you’re in the middle of a "battle" (like a bad grade or a friendship breakup), is it harder to deal with the situation itself, or the voice in your head telling you that you are the failure?

    3. Why is it so frustrating when we don't know the "next steps" for our lives? Does "not knowing" make you feel like God is distant, or does it push you to trust Him more?

    4. Research shows that teens today have stress levels as high as adults. When you hear that you aren't the only one feeling this "heaviness," does that make the battle feel easier or harder? Why do we often feel like we have to pretend everything is perfect?

    5. David spent about 10–15 years running for his life in the desert after he killed Goliath. If a "victory" doesn't immediately lead to an easy life, does that mean the victory didn't matter? What do you think David learned in the caves that he couldn't learn on the battlefield?

    6. In your specific battle right now (grades, family, anxiety), what would it actually look like to "hand the ownership" of that problem to God? Does that mean you stop trying, or does it mean you stop worrying about the result?

    7. The lesson claims there is a "gift" on the other side of the battle (like strength, empathy, or humility). If you look at a hard time you went through in the past, can you see a "gift" you have now that you wouldn't have if that battle never happened?
